Mind map tools

A mind map is a diagram used to represent words, ideas, tasks or other items linked to and arranged radially around a central key word or idea. It is used to generate, visualize, structure and classify ideas, and as an aid in study, organization, problem solving, and decision making. It is an image-centered diagram that represents semantic or other connections between portions of information. By presenting these connections in a radial, non-linear graphical manner, it encourages a brainstorming approach to any given organizational task, eliminating the hurdle of initially establishing an intrinsically appropriate or relevant conceptual framework to work within. Types of Australian Patents

There are two types of patents in Australia: Standard (20 years) and Innovation (8 years). Innovation patents require a lower level of inventiveness so they’re like the Utility Model of eg Germany and Japan. Examination of an Innovation patent is only compulsory if it is to be enforced. 3rd parties can request examination. For Standard patents there are two types of examination: Full or Modified. Modified examination can be requested if there is an identical patent already granted in eg US or GB. The numbering of granted Australian Patents recently changed. Six digit patent numbers are being given to applications filed before 5 July 2002. For applications filed on or after 5 July 2002 the granted patent number is the same as the application number

Drug-eluting stents - Emerging trends

A few years after their introduction in 2002, drug-eluting stents had all but replaced bare-metal stents in the treatment of coronary heart disease, capturing up to 90% of the market. PMost of the pysicians favored the new stents primarily because of their ability to minimize the risk of restenosis associated with bare-metal stents. Recently, however, new safety concerns have begun to erode the market share of drug-eluting stents.

Implantable Birth Control New Option For Women

A single-rod implantable contraceptive for birth control. Etonogestrel works by thickening the cervical mucus, which prevents sperm from fertilizing an egg and also stops any egg that does get fertilized from implanting itself in the uterine wall. Etonogestrel completely inhibits the release of eggs from the ovaries during the first two years. In the third year, it begins to lose its effectiveness. "Women who use this form of birth control don't have to worry about taking a pill every day or changing their birth control ring every month," says Thomas. "It's a great long-term option." Etonogestrel is a synthetic form of the naturally occurring female sex hormone, progesterone. In a woman's normal menstrual cycle, an egg matures and is released from the ovaries (ovulation)... more

Patent Intelligence for Open Innovation – a medical device case study

Intellectual Property is a boardroom issue. Patent intelligence – the transformation of content found in multiple patent documents into technical, business and legal insight – is a key element of competitive advantage. When applied to open innovation, the transfer of ideas and assets between innovative parties becomes a higher-value, shorter-turn competency. In an era in which more than 80% of market value is defined by intangible assets, leveraging patents for in- or out-licensing provides powerhouse opportunities for revenue enhancement and cost avoidance while building sustainable product differentiation. Importance of patent intelligence to licensing as related to open innovation Patent out-licensing is a key source of value extraction for all types of technology, service and product companies. Patent in-licensing is a growing approach to “fencing in” or “fencing out” innovation in important strategic areas. Both licensing activities together create the engine of commerce around th...

Patent Portfolio Management

Patents have evolved as a major element of influence in economics. Even though the balance of their macro-economic advantages and disadvantages still is under discussion today, on the micro-economic level enterprises are optimising the effects of intellectual property rights (IPRs) and specifically patents for their own benefit. Portfolios are instruments for analyzing and visualizing strategic positioning and lines of attack. The diversity of portfolio techniques is immense, although every technique has its blind spot as a result of the choice of axis dimensions... more

Building the Business Case for Innovation

Innovation has transitioned from a “nice to have” to a top priority for most companies because innovation drives organic growth. Like other business processes, innovation can be managed to achieve results. Unlike other business processes, innovation requires introducing risk, embracing failure, and doing things that are counter to most efficiency driving processes. Building a business case for innovation requires addressing these and other differences based on how innovation will be implemented within the organization. Specifying the approach, the impact on everyone in the organization, and the means by which innovation will occur in an organization drives the business case and increases the likelihood of success.... more

The integration of business intelligence and knowledge management

Enterprise executives understand that timely, accurate knowledge can mean improved business performance. Research and development investment in knowledge-management technologies has made significant progress. However, there still exists a need for an approach that integrates complementary and best-of-breed algorithms with guidance from domain expertise. eClassifier is an application that can quickly analyze a large collection of documents and utilize multiple algorithms, visualizations, and metrics to create and to maintain a taxonomy. The taxonomies that eClassifier helps to create can be arbitrarily complex hierarchical categorizations. The algorithms and representation must be robust in order to apply across many diverse domains. It was designed to employ a “mixed-initiative” approach that applies domain expertise, through interactions with state-of-the-art text analysis algorithms and visualization, to provide a global understanding of a document collection. Most of the complexiti...

Converting Raw Data into Actionable Intelligence

Intelligence is not just information. It is knowledge that has been specially prepared for a specific business need. Most of the professional are involved in data production and fancy representation, not intelligence. Here comes the expertise in converting the raw data into actionable intelligence. Analyzing technical intelligence, the key to the success of any business, involves putting the collected information into valuable contexts. This helps the decision makers in building critical business decisions. The first and most important step is selecting the right analytical framework. Next, analyzing the collected information through various qualitative and quantitative techniques. These can be used in creating scenarios as tools to anticipate future technologies. Further, detection of the antecedents of substitution and indicators of ‘disruptive technologies’ can be used for technology forecasting. Computer aided pattern assessment techniques, e.g., knowledge clusters, literature con...

Patents: A Tool for the Technological Intelligence

Patents are the largest source of technological information. A patent is given to the inventor as a reward for his innovation in the form of the exclusive right of the monopoly for a period of 20 years from the priority date of the invention. Due to advancement in the IT sector and internet, now these valuable documents are in the reach of the general public. Any person skilled in the art can go through various patent databases and after a search can get the patent document of his need. There are different patent databases viz, USPTO, EPO, JPO, etc freely open for the public access. If we go through the patents related to a specific technological area, we will be able to find lots of information about the life cycle of technological innovation viz., # evolutionary path of a specific technology, # technological development, # technological diversification, # technology merges, # major players in specific technological area, # key points of the specific technology, # The World Intellectu...

Patent Searching an Effective Tool for Competitive Intelligence

A lot of valuable information is now available of the industries in different databases in the web. Among all those patents the most important and easily available. Patent searching can give insights into the state of the art across any technical field. It can provide a platform to monitor the competitors activities by revealing which companies are involved in a field of technology of your interest. Patent searching data can also reveal the technological road map to a particular invention, the science or logic behind the invention, and its intended application. However the legal nature of patents makes them an uncompromisingly formal style. They are written in a language sometimes so abstruse that it does more to obscure the nature of the invention than to elucidate it. Also the millions of patents exited are distributed across different databases and in each case coded and grouped according to one of several classification systems. The family patent information is also varied from var...

Mining Patent Data for Competitive Intelligence

Patents are not new, their presence was noted long back during 16th century. In U.S. at the Constitutional Convention of 1787, a federal patent power was proposed by James Madison and Charles Pinckney and was adopted without debate as Article 1, Sec. 8, clause 8. The history of Patent Law began all the way back with the Constitution of the United States which was specific about providing protection for those who invent new and unique products. But after the TRIPS, intellectual property rights and patents gained importance to the business communities and industries. The retrieval of the patent information was made easy by internet and access to different patent databases. Patent are the source of the technological innovation and detailed mining of patent literature is proven to be useful of the Completive Intelligence. This article attempts to analyze importance and methods for the patent data mining and their future use in the competitive intelligence. The key issues discussed in this ...
