SOPHIA have announced the release of their patent search service based on the SOPHIA V2.0 search & discovery core. Searching for patent information is a major challenge and conventional approaches all rely on the user knowing exactly what they are looking for and being able to describe it accurately in order to recover it. The irony is, with patent searching users rarely know what they are looking for as they are trying to discover information they don’t yet know exists – an almost impossible task with conventional tools.

SOPHIA’s semantic search & discovery tool offers a means of discovering knowledge easily either through conventional descriptions or exemplar documents. The user no longer has to be able to describe exactly what they are looking for in order to discover, understand and retrieve useful information. In addition, because SOPHIA facilitates the browsing of semantic neighbourhoods of documents, it is easy to understand which companies are working in specific areas, thus helping to identify competitors / collaborators.
