When you have found a relevant patent, you may wish to check whether it is in force. At this point you could have a major infringement problem and need advice from a qualified attorney. However, to start you off, many patent offices provide a FREE service advising on the status of patents. You need to be very careful in using these services if you are unsure what you are doing, for example you may be informed 100% correctly that a patent is 'deemed to be withdrawn' (sounds like it is dead) but not realise the owner may still pay be able to reinstate it on payment of a small fee under certain circumstances.
